I couldn't resist another another view of the Great Court at the University of Queensland. I was struck at how familiar it all felt. Until I came across people sitting on the grass using their laptops. Funny. I hadn't even heard of a computer when I studied there. When I went to work opposite the University after I graduated, we had to send our programs on punched cards on a plane to Canberra (Australia's capital) to run on the BIG (and only) computer there overnight. If there were mistakes in the program or the punched card when it arrived back at work next morning it had to be corrected to be sent back the next night to be run again! I wonder were we more efficient at checking our programs back then? I can't believe that we ever got any work done! I was amused to read an article recently about the very first computer there in Canberra. It had the capacity of a few kilobytes. Much less than what we have on our laptops now.
