The beautiful and the.....interesting
A wonderfully painted traffic signal box just up the road....the painter dedicated it to her father.... the not so beautiful, depending on who you are and what your likes and dislikes are....this ugly looking fungus , or fungii, were growing in or under the long grass (it had been recently roughly cut) down the back of our church. It could give you a bit of a fright if you didn't know what it was! Luckily I have seen it once before, at my place...it is called a Starfish Fungus (aseroe rubra) according to A field guide to Australian FUNGI , by Bruce Fuhrer. This particular one was at least six inches across. Quite a large one too, as my book says they grow up to 130 mm...and I am sure this one was larger than that! Will have to go back and check just for the record. the river down at the end of the street.
