Record Heatwaves, tennis in the heat, monsoon rains in the north, fires in the south...it's Australia, Down Under

Image
In some parts of Australia, life is pretty OK and normal Some parts of the country are very dry, and VERY HOT... there is a funny Australian saying that goes "flat out like a lizard drinking"... and that is how many people have to cope with the extreme heat at the moment... doing nothing. prayers for those in the heatwave, that the cool change will come on cue or early (and safely) tomorrow with slightly less gusty winds and thus less fires and tragedy. Strange to be having funny heavy (normal) downpours of rain here, while others long for rain, and knowing that the monsoon has arrived in the north of the continent at last, with the threat of more cyclones. In Australia, one never knows quite what the next week will bring... well, maybe the week after, ( the weather bureau seems to be pretty good for the current weeks predictions).  So often spot on. Amazing that they are still playing tennis at The Australian Open.  Glad they cancelled games...

No Tennis...road closed

It has been a little wet here lately... no doubt you have heard already I think it has been raining for about forty days and forty nights...a little unusual for here...the damage bill for repairing all the roads and bridges must be phenomenal after many times some of them have been underwater this year, let alone the last three years...and not counting the cost to the individual people who have had their houses flooded, as well as the insurance companies... is it any wonder some people want to sell.... even some of the parks are closed... and the ferries...I went for a drive out there to have a look and to take some photos... the mighty Brisbane River at Moggill  and the Moggill Ferry   not quite sure why the horses need the solar panel...to plug in their ipods..? I always wanted to live in Kangaroo Gully Road. Pity the suburbs have moved out and the pineapple farms have disappeared Not a bad view of the city from out ther...

weather extremes

a huge cyclone is heading towards the coast of Queensland...expected to cross the coast tomorrow night...(quite near where my sister lives) and here in Victoria where I am visiting grandchildren, the temperature soars from an uncomfortable 33 celsius at 8am to 36.7 at 10am. Supposed to get to 38 today! Then a small cooler change after lunch..please roll on by quickly! The gusty Hot winds currently outside are very unnerving! (Currently 37.5 at midday as I post this). A good day for playing inside while the day is so hot out. Australia, a land of contrasts...what does the famous poem say... a land of droughts and flooding rains. In this state of Victoria with the high temperatures of today and the last couple of days, there are people in the north west part of the state, waiting for flood waters from weeks ago, to come rolling through their towns. So far many of the levee banks around the towns have held...good news for the residents, (not without a lot of hard work, and anguish I imagi...

Raindrops and Cyclones

Image
I managed to get a shot of some raindrops this morning. There is another cyclone approaching the coast, which promises even more rain for our already sodden ground. The sun came out again. The weekend will tell where and when the cyclone decides to travel, and possibly cross the coast.
